In the 1960's and 70's the United States Air Force routinely flew simulated low altitude bombing missions (practice) over parts of remote central and Northern Maine. A tracking station was installed a few miles south of Ashland Maine to monitor the practice 'runs'. On January 24, 1963 a B-52 from Arkansas was on a low level simulated bombing run when it crashed into Elephant Mtn near Greenville Maine. The crash was determined to be a mechanical failure, which alerted the crew before the plane slammed into the side of the mountain: 2 men survived (one of which made it after his ejection seat fired but his chute did not open and the snow helped cushion his landing). The other 7 on board perished in the crash.
The remains can be seen in the winter time but the debris ranges from small fragments to a wheel and section of the fuselage, most of which are covered in snow from a couple to several feet. The best viewing is in the summer months during ATV season which is when these pictures were taken - Kevin Freeman
